Boy, 13, fatally shot by police after pulling out BB gun

A 13-year-old boy was shot and killed by a Columbus Police officer responding to an armed robbery report Wednesday night.

"The Columbus Police Department has a history of investigating itself following these officer involved shootings and we believe that these investigations are inherently biased", Brown said.

Officers responding to an armed robbery call chased down two subjects near the scene. The victim told officers that a group of males had demanded money, threatening him with a gun, police said. Officers gave chase and King and another man ran into an alley where a policeman shot him multiple times after he pulled a weapon from his trousers, police told the station.

Tyree King, 13, was shot by a police officer in an alley east of downtown when he displayed what appeared to be a gun during a confrontation with police on Wednesday, authorities told an NBC affiliate in Columbus. When officers caught up to them and tried to arrest them in an alley, King pulled what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband, and Mason shot him, police said.

Down the block, officers spotted three males who matched the description of the alleged robbers, and two of them ran away when officers tried to speak with them, police said.

The officers and other suspects were not injured, WBNS-TV reports.

After the fatal shooting, on-scene investigators recovered a BB gun, which King allegedly brandished. He expressed condolences to King's family and said it was "absolutely critical that we get this (investigation) right". "We're talking about a 13-year-old that made a decision", Columbus police spokesman Sgt.

The gun "turns out not to be a firearm in the sense that it fires real bullets, but.it looks like a firearm that can kill you".

The family's legal team called for an independent investigation. He later died at a hospital.

"I was in the situation".
