Charlotte mayor asks 2016 hopefuls to delay visits

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will visit Charlotte on Sunday, one day before her first debate with Donald Trump. After further discussions with community leaders, we have chose to postpone Sunday's trip as to not impact the City's resources.

Clinton's campaign announced late Friday that she would postpone a visit to the city after having announced that she would go to Charlotte on Sunday.

Trump, who himself reportedly scratched plans to visit Charlotte, pounced in a tweet that suggested Clinton was going to North Carolina in the wake of Scott's controversial death to "grandstand", not lend a hand amidst the unrest.

Clinton's decision came after Charlotte Mayor Jennifer Roberts told CNN that Clinton should postpone her visit because the city's security resources were stretched thin.

The shooting of Keith Lamont Scott has sparked protests in Charlotte and is the latest incident to fuel a national discussion about lethal police force, particularly against African-Americans.

Mayor Jennifer Roberts told CNN on Friday that the Democratic presidential nominee should hold off coming to Charlotte and let the city recuperate from days of protest after the shooting of a black man by police.

"Charlotte should release police video of the Keith Lamont Scott shooting without delay", Clinton wrote on Twitter.

Clinton campaigned in North Carolina last week, when she criticized the state's controversial House Bill 2 during a rally in Greensboro. Her campaign did not immediately release details of her visit to Charlotte. Amid increased pressure to do so, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has not yet released dashcam footage of the shooting.

Police allowed Scott's family to view the videos on Wednesday.

As the News & Observer noted, a Sunday trip to North Carolina (not Saturday, as Trump tweeted) would have come just before Clinton and Trump are to face off at Hofstra University in NY in the first of three presidential debates.

"[The] overwhelming majority of people who have been concerned about police-community relations [are] doing it the right way", the president said.
