Blizzard pounds the Northeast, stranding travelers

By Thursday morning, 9 inches of snow had fallen at La Guardia Airport, while parts of New Jersey had up to 6.5 inches of snow.

The winter storm in the northeast is impacting flights departing from and arriving to Sarasota-Bradenton International airport.

Flights to and from New York City's JFK and LaGuardia airports, along with Philadelphia and Washington have been canceled. Airlines scrapped thousands of flights by late Wednesday as a precaution.

The change in weather follows a spring-like day when much of the Northeast was enjoying 60 degree temperatures. Stretches of Interstate 95 in Rhode Island were closed in the afternoon after tractor-trailers got stuck, and dozens of motorists got stranded on New York's Long Island after they couldn't make it up icy ramps. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said earlier Thursday that the almost 700 cancellations there amounted to 60 percent of the airport's flights.

Almost 19,000 Rhode Island customers were without power as of 2 p.m. Thursday, according to the National Grid.

Winter storm warnings are also active for New York City and Nassau County, and a blizzard warning is in effect for Suffolk County, where as much as 14 to 18 inches of snow could fall and winds can gust as high as 45 miles per hour.
