Wegmans stores sold out of Trump wines: Did boycott threats backfire?

The Feb. 15 Economy & Business article entitled "Wegmans chain is urged to pull the plug on Trump wines" described a threat by the Prince William County chapter of the National Organization for Women to boycott the supermarket chain unless it pulls Trump Winery products from its Virginia stores.

The Gates-based grocer said its 10 Virginia stores had mostly sold out of many varieties of the Trump-banded wine despite an effort to boycott the product and Wegmans for selling the product that gained widespread public attention earlier in the week.

Yet, since news of the boycott broke, Natale told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that sales of the Trump Winery products at Wegmans have soared - selling out of bottles on the shelves in back-up inventory. "How a product performs is our single measure for what stays on our shelves and what goes".

"Individual shoppers who feel strongly about an issue can demonstrate their convictions by refusing to buy a product", Natale continued. "When enough people do the same, and sales of a product drop precipitously, we stop selling that product in favor of one that's in greater demand".

Wegmans is the latest retail chain to find itself facing criticism from customers over Trump branded items.

"Certainly if Wegmans is carrying Trump wines, I personally will not shop there", Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, told the Washington Post.

Donald Trump to issue new executive order to revise travel ban
Trump said, however, that Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly said no and that the order had to take effect immediately. The Ninth Circuit's order has no impact on any of those other cases, though most other courts will likely follow suit.

PPI shows biggest gain in wholesale inflation since 2012
Inflation is widely expected to pick up this year as a result of the weaker pound, which is making imported goods more expensive. The 0.6% gain in the producer-price index followed a 0.2% advance the prior month, a Labor Department report showed Tuesday.

Virginia ABC sold 7,837 bottles of Trump wine in 2016, compared to 3,318 bottles of Trump wine in 2015.

One section of the Stop Trump Wine website reads as follows: "Events during Donald Trump's campaign made it clear that Eric Trump, the president of Trump Winery in Charlottesville, Virginia, shares the views of his father".

"I'm really interested in good real estate, not so much in wine", Trump said at the time.

Hillary Clinton won Virginia by more than 5 percent, but the residents apparently love themselves some Trump wine.

"We are completely sold out", said a store manager, who did not want to give her full name.

Wegmans will replenish its supply, but it might take three to four weeks, Natale said. All those wineries sold many more bottles than Trump Winery at Virginia ABC stories. Of the 364 ABC stores in the state, 69 stores carry at least one Trump Winery product.
