Advocates: DHS immigration memo calls for 'dragnet'
Memos from the Department of Homeland Security released on Tuesday contained new guidelines calling for immigrants to be deported if they are convicted, charged or suspected of a "chargeable criminal offense".
"The memo regarding the executive order on border security and immigration enforcement improvements outlines the steps that DHS will take to secure the nation's southern border, prevent further illegal immigration and to repatriate illegal immigrants swiftly, consistently and humanely".
There are an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.
One of the memos also directed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to hire 10,000 officers and agents and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) to hire 5,000 additional border patrol agents and 500 air and marine agents and officers. It also allows agents to prioritize a deportation if, in their judgment, an immigrant poses a risk to public safety or national security.
President Trump followed through on his campaign promise to tighten border control and build a wall along the US-Mexican border by signing executive orders on immigration just days after taking office in January.
These executive orders are separate from Trump's travel ban policy, now on hold while they are being debated in federal court.

Budapest Will Withdraw From Race To Host 2024 Olympics
Wednesday's council resolution is due to authorise Tarlos to discuss the bid with the national government and Olympic committee. Sport quote Balazs Furjes, the head of Budapest's organising team, as telling Inforadio: "The ship has sailed, it seems".
The new guidelines has sparked more fear and uncertainty in the immigrant community.
The orders sent jolts through United States immigrant communities, where millions of people, who have spent years building families and livelihoods in the country, a lot of them from Mexico and Central America, were seriously threatened with deportation for the first time in decades.
The memos also rescind any prior directives or orders issued by previous administrations that offered conflicting directions on immigration enforcement or the prioritization of deportees.
This includes, the department notes, immigrants driving without a license.
According to the same source, under the changes about to be imposed, if someone cannot prove they have lived in the United States for two continuous years, they could be eligible for "expedited removal".
Mr Trump's immigration policies have prompted protests on both sides of the border.
