Bloomberg Has Cancelled Its White House Correspondents Dinner Afterparty

Trump tweeted Saturday, "I will not be attending the White House Correspondents' Association Dinner this year".

The move, which is unprecedented in White House history, was slammed by the White House Correspondents' Association, who are directly responsible for the event in question.

The relationship between the press and Trump's White House has been strained. Vanity Fair, which has cohosted the after party with Bloomberg LP in past years, pulled out earlier this month. It also follows reports that media outlets such as CNN have been weighing whether to attend the event this year.

But Mr. Trump has battled the press throughout the presidential campaign and has had repeated run-ins with reporters since taking office.

The announcement comes amid escalating tension between the White House press corps and Trump, who recently dubbed a number of mainstream outlets as the "enemy of the people". This week, Buzzfeed reported that another favourite target of Trump's, CNN, was considering pulling out as well.

On Friday, Trump attacked the media in most of his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference. The failing @nytimes has become a joke. Full Frontal host Samantha Bee has counterprogrammed her own event-the Not the White House Correspondents' Dinner-on the same night, to raise money for the Committee to Protect Journalists.

The first dinner was held in 1921 and Calvin Coolidge was the first president to attend, in 1924.

In 1930 the dinner was cancelled due to the death of President Taft, in 1942 it was cancelled due to the United States entry into the Second World War, and in 1951 President Truman cancelled it over what he referred to as the 'uncertainty of the world situation'.

Fascinatingly, as Trump advisor Omarosa Manigault noted in this Frontline segment, Obama's barbs essentially drove Trump to run for president.

"The fake news doesn't tell the truth", he said.
