New York Mets' David Wright iffy for Opening Day with shoulder impingement

At the time, Sandy Alderson called it a mild strain and said the expectation was for Wright to probably miss about three weeks.

The Mets are not concerned at this point that the 34-year-old Wright's career could be over, Alderson said.

The Mets have shut down third baseman David Wright's throwing program and sent him back to NY to undergo tests on his right shoulder, general manager Sandy Alderson announced Tuesday. Wright is headed back to NY for further testing. Wright played 37 games last season after appearing in 38 the year before.

It's really bad news for Mets fans, but is exceptionally awful news for Wright himself, who played in only 75 games in 2015 and 2016 combined due to spinal stenosis and surgery for a herniated disk in his neck. The seven-time All-Star hit.301/.382/.506 with 222 home runs over his first 10 big league seasons, but has seen his production dip to.266/.339/.396 with 20 homers in 209 games since.

Wright is owed $67 million by the Mets over the next four seasons. Reyes played 50 games at third last season after re-joining the Mets as a free agent last June.

February 24, 2017 - The Mets raise eyebrows by having Wright, still recovering from that surgery last June, throw in private away from the media.
