ECO summit in Pakistan discusses regional peace and trade
Pakistan today deployed extra police and paramilitary troops in Islamabad as the national capital was put on high alert ahead of a high-profile multi-nation regional economic summit on Wednesday. According to TOLOnews, neither President of Afghanistan Ashraf Ghani nor the country's chief executive officer Abdullah Abdullah will be attending the event.
The ECO secretary general thanked the prime minister for hosting the ECO summit and for the excellent arrangements.
The prime minister said that it was an honour for Pakistan to host the 13th summit of the ECO and to assume the chair of this important regional organisation.
Pakistan's Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry described the summit as a key chance for regional economic growth and cooperation and an opportunity for Pakistan to show it can not be isolated from the global scene. He invited member states to participate in an worldwide science expo being held in his country this year. Discussions at the meeting will focus on prospects of cooperation in the fields of connectivity, trade, transport and energy. In 1992, the organization expanded to include seven new members, including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. The declaration approached connectivity as a dynamic concept that encompasses multiple dimensions including cyber, energy, rail, road, and ports and shipping. In a statement, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry said the ECO Council of Ministers adopted "the ECO Vision 2025" and renewed their commitment to promote regional economic integration among member states.
