DeVos Accused of Accidentally Praising Segregation

#HBCUs weren't "more options" for black students - for many years, they were the ONLY option. A last-minute decision to stage a photo opportunity with President Trump meant "there was very little listening to HBCU presidents today", wrote Walter M. Kimbrough, the president of Dillard University, in a post on Medium.

Furthermore, Matthew Yglesias noted at Vox, DeVos" statement exposes that "she doesn't seem to have any grasp of the higher education aspect of her portfolio.

The hashtag "HBCUs" trended on Monday evening and was briefly the most-mentioned hashtag on the social networking platform. Historically black schools were the only choice for many students of color before integration.

While DeVos showed support for LGBTQ students via Twitter following the Trump Administration's rollback of trans student protections last week, DeVos may have managed to undo what goodwill she may have instilled as her Education Department statement on HBCUs totally missed the mark. Devos is truly clueless and has far too much power.

For blacks in the 19th century, HBCUs didn't represent school "choice" - there was no choice because black students simply weren't allowed to attend white colleges and universities. The city's schools, where 83 percent of students are black and 74 percent live in poverty, have been in steady decline since charter schools started operating. The 1954 Supreme Court decision in Brown v. Board of Education ruled the doctrine unconstitutional. And HBCUs have been historically underfunded compared to their white counterparts.

India Q3 GDP growth seen slowing to about 6% on demonetisation
The CSO also retained its full-year growth forecast of 7.1%, against 7.9% in the financial year that ended in March 2016. Most economists, meanwhile, are forecasting growth for this year of between 2 percent and 2.5 percent.

Sixers' Joel Embiid out indefinitely with knee soreness, swelling
Embiid has only played one game since January 20 and has missed 13 straight games in Philadelphia. Embiid is now out indefinitely with swelling in his knee, and will have an MRI on Monday.

Jets Will Release Nick Mangold
Mangold was the Jets' second first-round pick - fellow lineman D'Brickashaw Ferguson was the first - in 2006 out of Ohio State. He will finish his tenure with the Jets as a two-time Pro Bowl selection and two-time first-team all-Pro team member.

A total of 16 higher education institutions were established exclusively for black students Under the revised Morrill Land-Grant Act. They had to create their own institutions of higher learning. That legacy has kept many HBCUs at a disadvantage to this day. Rather than focus exclusively on funding, we must be willing to make the tangible, structural reforms that will allow students to reach their full potential. These institutions are now referred to as Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs).

"They saw that the system wasn't working, that there was an absence of opportunity, so they took it upon themselves to provide the solution", says the statement from DeVos, published Tuesday.

Booker had been a staunch defender of educational reform through school choice.

The policy does not specifically state that transgender students must use the bathroom of their biological gender, only that non-discrimination laws no longer allow them to use the one of their choice, allowing local laws and policies to determine how schools will resolve the issue.

[T] his official 2017 federal government press release celebrates legal segregation (!) on the grounds that the Jim Crow education system gave black students "more options", as if there was a robust competition between HBCUs and white universities for their patronage. Their counsel and guidance will be crucial in addressing the current inequities we face in education.
