Nicola Sturgeon has been urged to take the threat of a second independence referendum off the table and focus on the SNP Government's "failings" in running Scotland.

Theresa May launched her strongest attack Friday since becoming prime minister against the Scottish Nationalist Party (SNP), accusing them of playing politics as though it were a game.

"I am determined to ensure that as we leave the European Union, we do so as one United Kingdom, which prospers outside the European Union as one United Kingdom", May said.

The Scottish economy has fallen below United Kingdom levels of growth, with employment and productivity levels also struggling, Mr Mundell said.

"We must avoid any unintended consequences for the coherence and integrity of a devolved United Kingdom as a result of our leaving the EU", May told the Scottish Tory conference in Glasgow.

"Theresa May better become accustomed to that new reality very quickly or she'll be facing an independence referendum in Scotland", he added. She said that a " tunnel-vision nationalism, which focuses only on independence at any cost, sells Scotland short".

"As we bring powers and control back to the United Kingdom, we must ensure that right powers sit at the right level to ensure our United Kingdom can operate effectively and in the interests of all of its citizens, including people in Scotland".

Mr Ross has indicated he will step down from his position as Vice-Chair of the bank to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Ross has also sought to ease concerns about whether the White House would try to politicize climate science.

"The SNP point out the importance of the European market to Scottish businesses", said May.

The PM also used her speech to make clear her support for the Union, insisting it is "not simply a constitutional artefact".

In a speech Tuesday, she accused the United Kingdom government of ignoring Scotland's views and failing to compromise as it prepares to trigger Article 50, kicking off the formal process of leaving the European Union.

Of late, Nicola Sturgeon and her SNP colleagues have been doing their best to stress that any future vote is down to the actions of Theresa May's government and its unquenchable thirst for a hard Brexit. A referendum in 2014 saw Scotland vote to remain in UK.

She asked why Tory politicians including herself, Theresa May and Scottish Secretary David Mundell should "say what our response would be to a hypothetical move the SNP hasn't made yet".

"While the SNP propose that decision-making should remain in Brussels, we will use the opportunity of Brexit to ensure that more decisions are devolved back into the hands of the Scottish people".

However, while she said that preserving the Union was her "personal priority" as prime minister, she did not rule out the prospect of giving the Scottish government the power to hold another independence vote in the future.
