UP polls: Phase VI ends as Modi-Akhilesh trade more blows
Except for some minor incidents, polling was by and large peaceful, officials said.
The campaigning for the first phase of polls ended at 3 pm on Friday.
There was no major law and order problem during the voting which was conducted amidst high-security measures at 1,643 polling stations.
Meanwhile, workers of two political parties clashed in Thangmeiband assembly constituency in which Congress workers reportedly attacked a candidate of People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance (PRJA) who was reportedly injured. This phase polling will be held in the regions adjoining Indo-Nepal border and bordering districts with north Bihar.
The importance of the eastern Uttar Pradesh in which there are a total of 89 seats which will go to polls in the sixth and seventh phase can be understood from the fact that Prime Minister Narendra Modi represents the Lok Sabha constituency of Varanasi which is scheduled to go to polls on 8 March, in the last phase of polling. During the 2012 assembly elections these constituencies had reported a voter turnout of 55.04 per cent.
The campaigning saw BJP state president KP Maurya likening rivals SP, Congress and BSP to different types of venomous "snakes" and "social cancer" and urging people to eliminate them by voting for the BJP.

As sixth phase polling in Uttar Pradesh is underway, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh appeared confident of a BJP majority in the state.
Irom Sharmila, Manipur's iconic rights activist, cast her vote in Khurai constituency after a gap of nearly two decades on Saturday.
A total of 168 candidates are in the fray in this phase whose fate will be decided by an electorate of 19,02,562 comprising 9,28,573 male and 9,73,989 female voters. Northeast India's oldest regional political outfit, Manipur Peoples' Party has fielded 13 candidates, while Trinamool Congress is contesting in 10 Assembly constituencies; Lok Jansakti Party has put candidates in 12 seats.
The Districts are Maharajganj, Kushinagar, Gorakhpur, Deoria, Azamgarh, Mau and Ballia. One of the strongest force against the Congress is the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) which has settled for nothing less than a full offensive stance when it comes to opposing the Congress.
Yogi Adityanath, BJP MP, GorakhpurBJP will win with a heavy majority in the sixth phase of elections in UP and get a two-third majority in the state.
