Durban had been the only city to launch a formal bid to host the Games after Edmonton in Canada withdrew.
She said they will want to have it tidied up in a few months and they are optimistic there are cities interested and capable of meeting the requirements.
"The Commonwealth Games Federation has completed its review of the final information submitted by South Africa on 30th November, 2016 to determine whether their proposals for hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games are consistent with their original bid commitments and the host city contract", it said.
Durban is the country's preferred choice as an Olympic host, and the 2022 Commonwealth Games were seen as an important stepping stone.
Last month, South Africa sports minister Fikile Mbalula indicated the government might withdraw its financial support because of the cost of staging the multi-sport event, saying "we can not live beyond our means".
