Mrs. Merkel Goes To Washington: German Chancellor Will Meet President Trump Tuesday

Snowstorms bearing down the U.S. east coast have forced German Chancellor Angela Merkel to postpone her visit to Washington DC. He is also likely to know her views on how the United States could help in resolving the conflict situation in Ukraine - which was ignited after Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

De Maizière shared the information with Merkel, who called for the border to remain open just hours before it was scheduled to close.

Trump will also be looking to Merkel's experience on the world stage, including in dealing with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During his presidential campaign, Trump criticized Merkel over Germany's refugee policies. A number of prominent German business leaders, including BMW CEO Harald Krüger and Siemens CEO Joe Kaeser, will join her on the trip to lobby against harsh tax hikes on German cars and moderate discussion on reducing America's $65 billion trade deficit with Germany.

But the Trump administration-whose officials have already sniped at Germany for its hefty trade surplus-shouldn't mistake Mrs. Merkel's pursuit of good.

"Free trade has only made this success story in the USA possible - 70 percent of the automobiles produced here are exported", Krueger said at a conference in February.

Merkel and Trump are expected to discuss a range of critical issues, including the future of North Atlantic Treaty Organisation.

During the 2016 USA presidential campaign, Trump regularly criticized Merkel for her open-door refugee policy, contrasting it with what he promised would be tighter controls in the United States if he won office. He once said what she did in Germany with refugees was "insane".

Merkel and President Donald Trump now are set to meet for the first time on Friday. Whether the situations in Ukraine and Syria are addressed or ignored after the meeting will be an important indicator of the administration's approach to both conflicts.
