White House says new information has emerged on Russia probe

Nunes' committee is heading an investigation into Russia's involvement in the presidential election, and the chairman did not brief his fellow members on the intelligence reports before holding a press conference and meeting with the president on March 22.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House refused to say on Thursday whether it secretly fed intelligence reports to a top Republican investigating possible coordination between Russian Federation and the 2016 Trump campaign.

Schiff said he wants to know why the materials appeared to be "laundered" through Nunes if they originated at the White House and expressed "deep concern" in a letter to the White House that the materials were being made the same day the Times story broke.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer refused to deny a blockbuster new report from the New York Times on Thursday that revealed two high-ranking officials from the Trump administration helped the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee access classified information meant to bolster President Donald Trump's infamous "wiretapp" tweets.

Last week, Nunes had told reporters at the Capitol that the classified intelligence reports he had seen - on White House grounds, at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building - showed that the Obama administration had, in the course of its "incidental collection," intercepted communications involving Trump associates, and perhaps Mr. Trump himself, during the transition. White House staff would have such an interest. And if it's necessary for us to interview these two individuals, then we should do so, but I have to say I'm more than perplexed by how these materials have been put forward and the motivations behind it.

SYRIA The United States is no longer making removing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad a focus of its policy in the war-torn country, the United States' U.N. ambassador says.

"We're doing our best to try and get the investigation back on track", Schiff said following the meeting.

Nunes has also been faulted by his congressional colleagues for sharing the information with President Trump before consulting with other members of the intelligence committee.

Nunes earlier this month said he had been shown information indicating that the US intelligence community incidentally collected information on members of President Trump's transition team. He's become a controversial figure in intelligence circles, but Trump chose to keep him on over the objections of the CIA and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, according to the officials. In the letter, White House Counsel Don McGhan wrote the material related to whether "information collected on United States persons was mishandled and leaked".

A Senate intelligence committee source said members view Nunes' claims as a "sideshow" and feel no urgency to run to the White House to view the documents.
