Scientists hope the drop in HPV cases will lead to a significant drop in future cervical cancer cases. Fourteen of these HPV types are known as high-risk strains because they are linked with an increased risk of certain cancers, including cancers of the cervix, vagina, vulva, anus, penis and throat.

'People really need to realize that this is a serious concern'.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States.

The prevalence of high-risk HPV among women in the new report is higher than it was in some previous studies, in part because the new report included women who were ages 18 to 59 years old in 2013 to 2014, which means they most likely were not vaccinated against HPV, McQuillan said.

Some types of HPV can cause genital warts and are considered low risk, with a small chance for causing cancer, the CDC report said.

Until recently, data on the prevalence of genital HPV infections in men in the general USA population was limited.

Of course not everybody with the cancer-causing strain will get cancer, but why spin the roulette wheel when you could just get a vaccine?

More than one in five United States adults are infected with a high-risk form of HPV, a shocking new CDC report reveals. As with genital HPV, rates were higher for men than women overall and in all racial and ethnic groups.

The CDC recommends HPV vaccinations for youth ages 11 to 12 so that they become protected before potential exposure to the virus through sexual contact.

Although HPV first came to the public's attention because of its link to cervical cancer, it is more prevalent in men than in women, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (L) gives an HPV vaccination to a 13-year-old girl in her office at the Miller School of Medicine on September 21, 2011 in Miami, Florida.

The study was conducted using Gardasil 9, a version of the vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration in late 2014. Reviewing the data for sexually active women ages 14 to 24, women who'd received the vaccine had a 2.1 percent infection rate compared to a rate of 16.9 percent for those who were unvaccinated. The agency has stated that even when the vaccination rates are augmenting, the rates among boys and girls are not as high as expected.

The prevalence of oral HPV was lowest among Asian adults and highest among black adults.

According to Dr Electra Paskett, a cancer control researcher at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, some think vaccination encourages youth to become promiscuous. It is a cancer vaccine, ' Paskett told The Washington Post. The report specifically looked at adults who didn't receive recommendations to get the HPV vaccine.
