Sony's opening of the animated family film "Smurfs: The Lost Village" is heading for third with about $14.5 million at 3,610 locations.

The Smurfs are feeling a little blue this weekend.

Featuring the voices of Demi Lovato and Joe Manganiello, the movie reportedly cost $60 million to make. "Smurfs 2" earned 347.5 million US dollars worldwide in 2013, far less than the 563.7 million USA dollars global tally scored by "The Smurfs" in 2011.

A weak batch of new releases has made this weekend's box office another tight battle between DreamWorks Animation's "The Boss Baby" and Disney's "Beauty and the Beast", but signs point to "Boss Baby" once again edging out "Beauty" for another No. 1 weekend. Released by 20th Century Fox, the film directed by Tom McGrath (Madagascar) dropped 48% from its opening weekend, but still brought in $26.3 million to bring its 10-day domestic total to $89.3 million.

In four weeks, Disney's live-action fairy tale has earned $432.3 million (£349.3 million) in the US.
