Myles, 66, was fatally shot just before 5 a.m. outside his home in the 9400 block of South Forest in what authorities say may have been a potential robbery. Myles sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body and was transported to Christ Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Judge Myles worked in Cook County Circuit Court's Criminal Division, and was described by the Chicago Tribune as being involved in several high profile cases over the last few years. After arguing with the shooter, Myles was reportedly shot multiple times. Among the suspects who appeared before him were two people accused in the Brown's Chicken murders that took the lives of seven people, and a man charged in the slayings of three relatives of singer Jennifer Hudson. The woman was hit in her leg and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in serious condition. She told the paper that she believes Myles and the woman were leaving home to go to a health club. She is expected to survive.

Myles worked at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse, Cook County's main criminal courthouse at 26th and California.

A Chicago-area judge was gunned down outside of his home early Monday morning. The judge had served in the criminal division for the past eight years.

Police said they are investigating whether robbery may have been a motive, but so far, it does not appear any property was stolen.
