Jackie Robinson Day 2017

Saturday is the 70th anniversary of legendary Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier and becoming the first African American to play in the modern era of Major League Baseball.

It's been 70 years since Jackie Robinson's first game in the Major Leagues. Many historians believe Robinson's breakthrough was an early step that eventually led to other civil rights breakthroughs.

It's a tradition that all players, coaches, and managers on both teams, and the umpires, wear "Number 42" on their jerseys. McCovey was still a child with big league aspirations at the time of Robinson's debut, and he told Marty about what impact Robinson had on his baseball dream. "But he's somebody we in the African-American community celebrate every day". I've had the good fortune of playing with players from more than 10 countries throughout my career. Major League Baseball took notice years ago and invested millions of dollars in youth programs, and The Jackie Robinson Foundation also recognized the need.
