Canada changed its policy on pricing its domestic milk to cover more dairy ingredients, leading to lower prices for Canadian products including ultra-filtered milk that compete with the US product.

The Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), a leading USA science and tech policy think tank, hoped that the goal of Trump's executive order on the H-1B programme is "mend it, don't end it".

"Right now, widespread abuse in our immigration system is allowing American workers of all backgrounds to be replaced by workers brought in from other countries to fill the same job for, sometimes, less pay".

A new executive order was signed by Trump on Tuesday during his trip to Kenosha, Wisconsin.

In his new directive, the president is targeting the H-1B visa program, which the White House says undercuts USA workers by bringing in large numbers of cheaper, foreign workers and driving down wages.

"We would encourage changes to the H-1B visas programme", IBM CFO Martin Schroeter told CNBC in an interview.

Trump and other critics of the program say it is abused by those Indian firms, who - they claim - flood the visa lottery with applications and then send workers to the US on salaries that undercut their American counterparts. The Trump administration plans to explore ways to weight H-1B visa approvals toward higher-skilled, higher-paid workers and away from the current lottery system.

Since the early days of Trump's campaign, he has been vocal about his stance on the visa program, constantly saying that it's a threat to the American labor force.

"It would be a mistake to close the door on high-skilled workers from around the world who can contribute to American businesses growth and expansion and make the US more competitive around the world".

Trump has long pledged to support American goods and workers, but his own business record is mixed.
