The government has asked all VIPs, excluding the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Chief Justice of India, and the Speaker of Lok Sabha, to lose the red beacon atop cars. As a result, VIPs or other dignitaries will not be able to use red beacons on their vehicles from May 1, 2017.

According to the government, vehicles with beacon lights have no place in a democratic country.

Last week, it was reported that the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) has called a meeting to discuss whether the red beacon should be discarded or restricted to certain dignitaries.
