Trump quotes about Andrew Jackson and the Civil War

"I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later, you wouldn't have had the Civil War", Trump claimed about the president who at his death owned 150 slaves. He said, "there's no reason for this.'" However, Trump's tweet retroactively confirms that he meant to say that he believed Jackson "saw [the war] coming" and that he might've prevented it.

Since the news of the President's most recent Civil War comments broke, Trump has come under fire on social media and has been eviscerated by Twitter users for his "ignorance" and lack of understanding, which prompted many to question whether or not the president had retained basic US history. Others have suggested that Trump was, in a roundabout way, referencing Jackson's opposition to his VP and the Nullification Crisis of the 1830s, which involved a confrontation between SC and the federal government over tariffs. As it turns out, Jackson wanted to maintain the union during his presidency and held federal law in high regard.

In an interview Sunday with the Washington Examiner, Trump suggested that if President Andrew Jackson, who died in 1845, had been alive at the time, the cataclysmic conflict - rooted in a deeply divisive debate over slavery - could have been completely avoided. I wish I could say this is amusing and not deeply disturbing. Most revisionist jackasses will at least try to argue that the Civil Was wasn't really about slavery (it was) but about "states' rights" and "economic issues".

The White House has drawn parallels between Trump and Jackson, particularly between Trump's success with working-class voters and how Jackson fashioned himself as a champion of the common man. Trump paid tribute to Jackson, known as "Old Hickory", by visiting Jackson's grave in Tennessee in March. But why was there a Civil War?

Trump made his remarks after commenting on his admiration for Andrew Jackson, saying that the former President would have averted the Civil War if he had been in office later. (Dubito ergo cogito ergo sum, as Descartes would say.) Trump has even started reading. And then there's Donald Trump, who spent the part of yesterday when he wasn't praising North Korea's dictator spinning a revisionist take on the Civil War. Instead, the President of the United States is on the same intellectual plane as the Insane Clown Posse. And frankly it should be discussed. "Are you kidding me?" I think it's a very big topic. "And we should find out what the hell is going on". I was just looking at his statement again.

Trump responded, "You can take- any way. I want to hear it from President Trump".

We recently asked you to support our journalism. "You can have your own opinions". Rather, he cited Andrew Jackson's toughness.

No reason whatsoever! You know, besides the whole claim-to-the-very-same-holy-land thing.
