To this, Nedumpara said he is "very much in Chennai". "In the meantime, this court directs the Air Control Authority [referring to the Airports Authority of India] New Delhi, not to permit the said accused 1 to 8 from going overseas until the disposal of this crucial issue, since the nature of the offense, that is caste discrimination, is not only a heinous crime but also a very cruel act, and is punishable as per the Constitution", Justice Karnan stated in the order.

However, when CJI asked about the whereabouts of Justice Karnan, lawyer Nedumpara said that 12 advocates on record have refused to represent Justice Karnan, who is in Chennai. "We have no idea if he will reach the temple tomorrow", the official said.

A day after the Supreme Court ordered the arrest of Calcutta high court judge, Justice C S Karnan, police teams from Bengal and Tamil Nadu were unable to locate him on Wednesday.

Kumar said a team of police from Kolkata and Chennai, where Karnan was earlier a judge, had questioned him already.

In his appeal, Justice Karnan has challenged the Constitutional validity of contempt of court act and said that he has been convicted without any charges being framed.

The team then travelled to Andhra Pradesh but came back empty-handed.

The Supreme Court viewed Justice Karnan's efforts as contempt of court and issued notice against him for allegedly degrading the judiciary by writing scurrilous letters against sitting and retired high court and Supreme Court judges.

A belligerent Justice Karnan had told the court he would not appear before it again even if he was arrested and put in jail. This decision he stayed through a judicial order of his own, which was later upheld by a two-judge bench of the high court. Numerous issues raised in the Karnan case, starting from his allegations of corruption and issue of appointments, are rooted in this.

Speculations are that the Calcutta High Court judge may have fled the country.

To add a further twist to this tale, Karnan is now known to have left Kolkata the morning of the Supreme Court's decision to send him to jail.

Justice Karnan was transferred from the Madras HC for his repeated allegations and run-ins with its chief justice and fellow judges.
