Eastern shines in NCAA Academic Progress Report

As expected, the UConn men's basketball program posted a ideal 1,000 score in the Academic Progress Rating (APR) released by the NCAA on Wednesday. With the exception of women's track, all of those programs were above the national average among Division I schools that sponsor those sports. "We are proud of the progress we have made, but we have more to do as we work each and every day to develop our student-athletes to their fullest potential through intercollegiate athletics".

Each student-athlete receiving athletically-related financial aid earns one point for staying in school and one point for being academically eligible.

The APR announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is meant to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes.

Ohio State football's best multi-year rate was 988, achieved in 2010-11.

Teams must earn a 930 four-year average April to participate in NCAA championships.

Baseball posted an April improvement for the fourth consecutive season and its 976 mark is its best since the April program was established.

Beach volleyball, in its April debut, joined 13 others sports scoring a ideal single-year score (1000) for the 2015-16 campaign. The current multi-year April report covers the 2012-13 through 2015-16 academic years. Those sports were: women's swimming (987), women's golf (980) and women's volleyball (980). "The steps we have taken over the past few years are producing their desired outcome, and these scores help demonstrate that student-athletes can and do excel in all their endeavors at our university".

Rates are an average of each school's performance for the last four years. The volleyball program reached the 1,000 April mark for the second straight year and women's cross country was ideal for the second time. Baseball teams earned a 973 four-year rate (up from 970), and football teams earned a 962 (up from 959). Four teams saw their scores fall with women's basketball's 978 a 13-point drop and 10 among SEC teams in that sport. A ideal score is 1,000. Nine teams registered flawless one-year April scores of 1,000 to lead the Big 12 Conference. The Highlanders also had five other sports achieve flawless single-year scores: men's golf, men's soccer, women's basketball, women's tennis and volleyball. Of the 17 teams ineligible to participate in NCAA tournaments next year, 15 are Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Eleven of UT's 18 programs posted one-year scores of 1,000 in 2015-16. The data released on Wednesday includes the scholarship student-athletes on rosters from the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, and 2015-16 academic years.

Rice (984), UTEP (980) and North Texas (979) earned the state's highest scores. The 2015-16 overall four-year rate is 981, up two points from the four-year rate announced last year.
