People shouted that they needed police, the witness said. He had been police chief for three weeks.

Officers have not released a description of a potential gunman. A crisis team was on the scene to help assist those officers, as well as the residents in the facility and other employees.

Two employees of the center and the suspected gunman were found dead inside the nursing home, the sheriff said.

A woman who works about a block from where an OH police chief and two nursing home employees were killed says she heard gunshots followed by screaming and then sirens.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is aiding local authorities in assessing the crime scene. Scanner traffic reports the active shooter has been "neutralized".

The police officer killed is from the Kirkersville department, according to 10TV.

The gunman was in a wooded area behind the nursing home when he encountered two passers-by, whom he temporarily took hostage.

Citing unidentified law enforcement sources, WBNS-TV reported that the shooter was down around 8:50 a.m.

Brian Milam, of Kirksersville for the last decade, lives next door to the nursing home.

Thorp says it was in that area that Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric Disario was killed while responding to reports of a man with a gun. According to the Newark Advocate, Southwest Licking Local School District students were on buses when the situation started.

While parents can pick up their children at the middle school, Richards said "they don't have to".

Other schools in the district were also placed on a Level 1 lockdown as a precaution, which means no one leaves and no one comes in, but classes resume.
