US Navy ship collides with South Korean fishing boat

The cruiser Lake Champlain was hit on its left side at mid-ship, Navy officials said in a news release this morning.

"It is quite unusual for a military ship to collide with a fishing vessel".

USA cruiser USS Lake Champlain clashed with South Korean fishing ship 502 Namyang about 83 kilometers south of Ulleung Island at around noon, according to South Korea's military. The master claimed he did not see the Lake Champlain until it was too late.

In April, USS Carl Vinson moved immediately to the Korean Peninsula in an interview last week following increased tensions with North Korea.

"Both ships were able to navigate under their own power", the statement added.

The incident is under investigation by both the U.S. Navy and the South Korea Coast Guard.

The boat struck the San Diego-based Lake Champlain amidships despite the ship's efforts to hail the boat on bridge-to-bridge radio.
