Christian militias killed as many as 30 civilians over the weekend in escalating violence on the Central African Republic border with Congo.

This prompted MINUSCA to promptly deploy extra troops to fend off further attacks with Verhoosel reporting that the town had been partly secured early Sunday evening.

The UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in CAR (MINUSCA), said in a statement that the armed elements continue to systematically and deliberately attack the MINUSCA base with heavy weaponry to impede the peacekeepers from doing their extremely vital task of protecting the civilian population.

"We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Moroccan authorities", said the French Foreign Ministry, stressing that France condemns with the utmost firmness the attack on the city of Bangassou and the MINUSCA contingent, which resulted in numerous civilian casualties and the death of a Moroccan blue helmet. He said child soldiers, who appear to be drugged, are among the assailants.

The Catholic Church in the Central African Republic has attempted to persuade the militias to end the assault and leave the town, according to Catholic charity organization Caritas.

At least six United Nations peacekeepers have been killed. The country has been plagued by inter-religious violence since 2013.
