Trump Asked Comey to Shut Down Flynn Probe

"Obstruction of justice is not a black-and-white offense, so reasonable minds may well disagree about whether asking Comey to go easy on Flynn rises to the level of what federal law prohibits", said Steve Vladeck, CNN legal analyst and professor of law at the University of Texas School of Law.

Israel's top-selling newspaper Yediot Aharonot reported in January that Israeli intelligence officials had been told in a meeting with U.S. colleagues that "Israeli intelligence information, methods of operation and sources" could leak from a Trump administration seen as having close ties to the Kremlin.

Earlier in the day, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster denied Trump had caused a "lapse in national security", saying it was "wholly appropriate for the president to share whatever information he thinks is necessary to advance the security of the American people".

Despite the White House's denials, the Times described "the existence of Mr. Trump's request" for an investigative slowdown as 'the clearest evidence that the president has tried to directly influence the Justice Department and F.B.I. investigation into links between Mr. Trump's associates and Russian Federation'.

As for Comey, whom Trump fired last week, the FBI director wrote in a memo after a February meeting at the White House that the new president had asked him to shut down the FBI's investigation of Flynn and his Russian contacts, said a person who had read the memo.

White House officials staunchly defended President Donald Trump's disclosure of classified information supplied by Israel, to senior Russian officials.

"I hope you can let this go", the president told Comey, according to the memo, The New York Times reported.

'If true, this is yet another disturbing allegation that the president may have engaged in some interference or obstruction of the investigation.

The White House quickly responded to the Times story, claiming in a statement that 'the President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn'. Regarding Clinton's sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky, a former White House intern, the proceedings stated: "President Clinton lied under oath in his civil deposition about his discussions with Ms. Lewinsky concerning her involvement in the Jones case". And lawmakers have alleged that the sudden ouster was an attempt to stifle the bureau's investigation into Trump associates' ties to Russia's meddling in the campaign. "Memos, transcripts, tapes - the list keeps getting longer", he said. Comey reportedly wrote the memo immediately after he met with Trump, as part of an effort to document situations in which the president sought to interfere in the FBI's operations. Comey said he replied that "I agree he is a good guy" but said nothing to Trump about limiting the investigation.
