Birthplace of grunge mourns 'Seattle's son' Chris Cornell

Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office's issued a statement on Thursday stating that the cause of death had been determined as suicide.

The well-known TV personality and DJ says Cornell was "an icon of an era" and that we need to look at how to recognise when people are struggling.

Seattle-born Cornell was the lead singer of Soundgarden, one of the leading bands in the grunge music movement in the '80s and '90s.

His final song of the night was Badmotorfinger's "Slaves & Bulldozers" and while performing it, Soundgarden worked in a little bit of Led Zeppelin's "In My Time of Dying". Cornell, whom the BBC said grew up as "a loner, afflicted by agoraphobia and anxiety", knew a little something about that.

The band released three albums in six years and also performed at a concert billed as Cuba's first outdoor rock concert by an American band, though some Cuban artists have disputed that claim. My heart goes out to his family.

Cornell, with little formal training, had one of the music world's most wide-ranging voices.

It took Shaw more than a year to write the songs and record them at a studio on Harvard's campus.

Cornell, who was known for his dynamic vocals, which ranged from a soft melodic croon to a window-shattering scream, started his career with the cover band the Shemps, which also featured bassist Hiro Yamamoto and later, guitarist Kim Thayil. The group - essentially Cornell fronting what would become Pearl Jam - was formed in tribute to his friend Andrew Wood, frontman of Mother Love Bone, who had died from a heroin overdose. He then joined Audioslave, which included former Rage Against the Machine members Tom Morello, Brad Wilk, and Tim Commerford.

Sir Elton posted a picture of Cornell on Instagram, with the caption: "Shocked and saddened by the sudden death of Chris Cornell".

Nirvana front man Kurt Cobain, who towered over the grunge scene, killed himself in 1994 and Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland died on a tour bus in 2015 from a drug overdose.
