Iraqi forces have launched a broad assault on parts of battleground second city Mosul still held by the Islamic State group, the military announced on Saturday.

Its capital, Baghdad, and a northern city, Mosul.

Speaking at a news conference in London, Dillon explained that the remaining ISIS militants control less than 10 square kilometers of the city, adding that cleansing this area is hard to control and constitutes a great challenge.

"Our forces are capable of winning the fight of the Old City and regaining the al-Nouri Mosque, and ISIS are losing control of the vital area close by al-Hadba minaret (adjacent to al-Nouri Mosque)".

An Iraqi military, source speaking on condition of anonymity, told The New Arab that the attack on the Old City stopped two days ago, without any justification from the Joint Operations Command. Boko Haram, an ISIS-affiliate in Nigeria, is notorious for attacking civilian targets with female suicide bombers, many of whom are suspected of being coerced into service.

Furthermore, the operation came as Iraqi security forces, backed by the anti-IS worldwide coalition, were simultaneously conducting a major offensive to dislodge IS militants from their major stronghold in western Mosul. O'Brien stated that authorities had urged the people to leave the Old City, but IS prevented many of them from doing so.

Initially, Iraqi forces punched too deep into Mosul too fast and suffered heavy casualties from the IS fighters who knew the terrain and had years to prepare defenses.

Police forces accompany the advancing Iraqi army into newly liberated districts in Mosul to swiftly restore public order and prevent thefts and looting in many deserted neighbourhoods where some of the residents are still on the run, taking refuge in nearby camps south and north of the province.

On Thursday, the United States admitted that at least 105 Iraqi civilians were killed in an air strike it carried out in Mosul in March. Civilians too have been caught in the crossfire, leaving hundreds of thousands displaced and thousands dead. Iraqi forces in October kicked off an offensive to retake it.

Iraqi forces dropped leaflets over the area Friday, telling civilians to flee in an effort to facilitate the military operations. Mosul residents have been suffering from food shortages for months, a hardship expected to be exacerbated during the holy month of Ramadan that began Friday night, when Muslims fast during daylight hours.

Ayad Sayyid, a doctor working at a clinic treating civilians fleeing Mosul said as the battle has ground on he is seeing more children and elderly patients suffering from malnutrition.
