Rick Best was a dad, Army vet, and employee of the city of Portland, Ore., who had his life snatched away last Friday on a MAX train there after he stepped in to defend two Muslim teens.

Suspect in theft of property from Ricky Best has been apprehended.

Surveillance cameras captured a man carrying Ricky Best's black backpack.

"Based on the investigation, detectives believe that Tschaggeny removed Best's ring from his finger after the attack", Portland police said in a news release.

Some of Best's possessions ― including his wallet ― were missing from the backpack when officers recovered it. Tschaggeny is facing multiple charges, including second-degree theft and second-degree abuse of a corpse.

Jeremy Joseph Christian is accused of stabbing Best and Taliesin Namkai-Meche, 23, to death. A third stabbing victim, 21-year-old Micah Fletcher, suffered knife wounds to the neck but survived. "It's completely heartless", Portland police spokesman Sgt. Pete Simpson told the Oregonian. Best died at the scene, police have said.

Authorities said Tschaggeny stole Best's belongings as commuters fled the train. Once arrested, Christian made shocking statements when he was put in the back of a police auto equipped with audio and video recording devices, according to an affidavit released Tuesday.
