Gennett ties home run mark

Reds' bench player Scooter Gennett hit four home runs in the Reds' 13-1 rout of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Words no one expected to type Tuesday night: Scooter Gennett hit four home runs in a game for the Reds against the Cardinals. The Phillies' shortstop, who hit 20 home runs a year ago with a previous career high of eight, seemed the most extreme individual example of the home run binge that swept across the sport beginning in the second half of the 2015 season.

Gennett started his night by hitting a grand slam; by the end of what became a blowout win over the rival St. Louis Cardinals, he had more than doubled his home run production for the year, to seven.

So on a day that he wasn't even supposed to start, Ryan Joseph "Scooter" Gennett became the first Cincinnati Red and 17th Major League Baseball player to hit four home runs in a game.

"We were going to plan on it around December, but I have 30 first cousins and it would have been a huge wedding and a lot of stuff to worry about, and she didn't want that", Gennett said.

After seeing little to no action with New York Mets, Minnesota Twins and Kansas Royals, Humber finally found himself in a starter's role for the second straight season with Chicago White Sox in 2012.

Wainwright's streak of scoreless innings ended at 17 in the first inning. Adleman (4-2) improved to 2-0 with 1.71 earned-run average over his last three starts.

Reds' Scooter Gennett homers 4 times, drives in 10 runs

Gennett snapped an 0-for-19 slump during the Reds' 4-2 win over the Cardinals on Monday. Junior. None of them ever hit four in a game.

PHILLIES 3, BRAVES 1: Aaron Nola allowed a run over eight innings, Odubel Herrera doubled in the go-ahead run in the sixth and Philadelphia survived a ninth-inning scare to beat Atlanta at Atlanta.

"He had a career night, a great night", said Adam Wainwright (6-4), who gave up Gennett's second career grand slam.

Before the outburst, Gennett had 39 career homers in 1,755 plate appearances over five seasons, with a career high of 14 past year. He received not one curtain call but two; he hit more homers than any of the Big Red Machine's Hall of Fame hitters managed in a single game. Gennett lined it 377 feet into the stands in right for his fourth home run of the game.

Jason Heyward had three hits and two RBIs and Kris Bryant scored two runs. A terrific feat for any first year hurler, however, his 20 strikeouts made it one of the greatest single game pitching performances in Major League Baseball history.

Gennett's night began with a blooper RBI single in the first inning.
