"It's so cool, we really believe it is going to take your home music experience to the next level", Apple chief executive Tim Cook said of the new device.

Apple's answer to the Amazon Echo and Google Home, the Apple HomePod comes out into the markets at a price point of $349. This means that Apple has placed an emphasis on audio quality, packing the speaker with an array of seven tweeters and a woofer as well as "spatial awareness" that detects its location in a room and adapts the output automatically. Apple is yet to reveal what it will cost in the United Kingdom, but we expect to see it price around £300.

Apple unveiled a few new technologies at its Worldwide Developers Conference Monday.

Schiller said the HomePod will be deeply integrated with the Apple Music streaming music service.

The technology giant also announced a new software kit for developers called ARKit, which will enabled app developers to build augmented reality apps on Apple's platforms more easily. The device also would be able to control music playback and home-automation devices with voice commands.

But while Amazon and Google have stressed the daily practicalities of the artificial intelligence assistants that run Echo and Home, Apple framed HomePod more as a music-listening platform, with practicalities like reminders and calendar nearly an after thought.

New iPads: Apple showed off new versions of its personal tablet, as well, which features ProMotion - a software improvement that increases the refresh rate to smooth out streamed video.

The extensive range of updates are all due for release later this year. For instance, Apple initially resisted enlarging the size of iPhone's screen despite strong sales for larger-display phones made by Samsung and other rivals.

The company is also launching new models of both the iPad and the Mac computer. There's also no word yet on support for third-party services, or ways for developers to adapt their services for HomePod.
