Celtics trade No. 1 overall draft pick to 76ers

Philadelphia completed its trade for the No. 1 overall pick in this year's National Basketball Association draft, landing the pick from the Boston Celtics on Monday in a move that clears the way for the 76ers to grab guard Markelle Fultz.

The Celtics have been linked with either Josh Jackson of Kansas or Jayson Tatum of Duke at No. 3, although multiple media outlets reported the team may be willing to deal the pick. NBA.com says the news came from "league sources", while the one from Los Angeles Times only said Boston and Philadelphia "agreed in principle".

Less than two weeks removed from the NBA finals, the association is already grabbing headlines as it gears up for the offseason. "We feel like it's a jump-start for us".

Shortly after the announcement of the deal, Team President Danny Ainge met with the media to give the thinking behind the trade and what might happen going forward.

The Celtics already have a point guard in Isaiah Thomas, so it's not insane to imagine that they'll be looking to fill another position on their roster with the pick.

They took Ben Simmons No. 1 overall, but he hasn't played one minute since breaking a bone in his foot in training camp before last season. If the Lakers pick falls outside those parameters, the Sixers will either send the better of their or the Sacramento Kings' 2019 draft pick to the Celtics, provided it is not the No. 1 pick. The pick that Boston would acquire belongs to the Lakers, Kings or Sixers.

If Boston holds onto the pick, it would have seven first-rounders in the next three years. After finishing with the No. 1 seed in the East this season, they are trying to package some of their picks for an established star that could help them close the gap on National Basketball Association finalists Cleveland and Golden State. “We know how good Cleveland and we know how good Golden State is.

Apple demands cut of Chinese app 'tips'

"The odds are in your favor at No. 1 more so than in any other (draft) position", Colangelo said during a news conference Monday afternoon. "Boston needs to continue to do what they look like they're doing, which is draft smart and make some savvy signings". "But we're not afraid of that".

The disparity between the top picks is so small that trading the first pick away in this draft is justifiable. They selected Ben Simmons previous year, but he missed all of the 2016-17 season with a broken foot.

With Thomas, the Celtics didnt necessarily need a point guard — which is the piece Philadelphia apparently wanted most.

Fultz, who recently turned 19, averaged 23.2 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists as a freshman on a Washington team that went 9-22.

"I think they're both terrific players", Ainge said.

The Philadelphia 76ers thrilled their fans and left some suspense surrounding Thursday's National Basketball Association draft. He arrived at the training complex wearing his own Sixers hat, planned to get a cheesesteak after his workout, and took a photo with Simmons, Joel Embiid and Robert Covington. "We felt the value of adding the one pick now was the right thing at the expense of only losing one of four going forward".
