Police blame Venus Williams for fatal auto crash

According to the lawsuit, Williams ran a red light, failed to yield the right-of way, inattentive driving and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

But before that, Williams was asked if she would like to say anything about the accident.

But afterwards, when pressed on how she had been coping, Williams broke down completely before leaving a press conference clearly shaken up. She replied, "Maybe I should go", before returning a few minutes later.

Making her 20th career Wimbledon appearance, Williams fought through a spirited first set effort by the 21-year-old Mertens.

"My honest condolence to the family and relatives of Jerome Barson, who are in my thoughts and prayers", added the eldest of the sisters Williams, who must take part Monday in the tournament of Wimbledon.

According to The New York Times, Jerome Barson was the 78-year-old passenger, who died two weeks after the accident.

Williams plays Wang Qiang in the second round on Wednesday, with questions about the accident potentially resurfacing.

"TMZ reports that police said Williams is to blame for the accident, with the police report saying, "[ Venus] is at fault for violating the right of way of [the other driver]".

Venus Williams has finally spoken on the fatal auto accident she is allegedly responsible for.

The wife of the crash victim, Esther Linda Barson, told police she proceeded westbound through a green light and T-boned Williams' auto.

Williams was not injured in the Florida crash, but Palm Beach Gardens police found her at fault. According to that same report, Williams' vehicle was driving at a speed of about 5 miles per hour.

"Mrs. Barson is suffering intense grief and doesn't know how she will go on", Steinger told CNN.

The 10th-seeded Williams beat Elise Mertens 7-6 (7), 6-4 Monday in the first round at Wimbledon, a tournament the American has won five times.

Williams has not been charged but police hold her accountable for the traffic accident, and Palm Beach Gardens police's Major Paul Rogers said on Thursday the investigation was continuing.
