Rajon Rondo reportedly agrees to one-year deal with Pelicans

A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the New Orleans Pelicans have agreed in principle on a one-year deal with Rajon Rondo.

Rondo played with Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins in Sacramento during the 2015-16 season, and the two formed a strong bond.?

The Chicago Bulls waived Rondo on June 30 after just one season.

The Bulls found a way to make the playoffs as the eighth seed and were up 2-0 against the Boston Celtics in the first round.

Rondo, however, missed the rest of the series with a thumb injury, and Chicago lost the next four games. After the team resigned point guard Jrue Holiday this offseason, they didn't have a traditional back up to his position. With the Bulls entering a rebuilding phase - and eager to pocket the $11 million difference - Rondo hit the free agent market, drawing interest from the Pelicans, the Lakers and the Knicks, according to various reports. It's possible Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry will use the two guards together at times, with Holiday playing off the ball.

Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg benched Rondo around the halfway mark of the season, but after trying a number of different combinations, he finally brought him back into the starting lineup as the team pushed for a playoff spot.

A source said Cousins played a "pivotal" role in Rondo coming to the Pelicans. His 37.6 percent on 3-pointers was the best percentage of Rondo's career, though he attempted fewer than two shots from the arc per game.
