He famously claimed he would never die, so perhaps Salvador Dali might have been amused by the spectacle of being raised from his tomb to settle a claim that he secretly fathered a television fortune teller.

It remains to be seen if the chemicals used for preserving the artist's body have damaged his genetic information, said Narcis Bardalet, the forensic expert who embalmed Dali back in 1989.

Forensic experts opened the artist's coffin Thursday night in a sensitive operation that involved using pulleys to lift a 1.5-ton stone slab.

Salvador Dali, the world famous Surrealist painter, died in 1989 at the age of 84.

Abel said her mother was a domestic employee at the home of friends of Dali in Cadaques, a coastal town in the Catalonia region within walking distance of the artist's house and studio.

In June, a Madrid judge ruled a DNA test should be performed to find out whether her allegations were true.

According to her lawyer, if it turns out that Abel is indeed the daughter of the famed artist, she could be entitled to a quarter of his vast fortune, which includes properties and hundreds of paintings, and is now entirely in the hands of the Spanish state. However, Martinez claims that she was born from a secret affair that her mother, a maid, had with the artist in 1955, according to court documents.

Hair, nails and two bones have been removed from Dali's embalmed corpse to allow officials to carry out DNA tests following a paternity claim. There are no current estimates of the value of that fortune.

Ms Abel's court litigation started in 2015 when she sued the Ministry of Finance, as the trustee of Dali's estate, and the Gala Dali Foundation that was created to administer it.

Maria Pilar Abel claims that she is entitled to some of Dali's estate.

She became his muse - he gave her the pet name Gala - and remained at his side for the rest of her life. Abel said a desire to honor her mother's memory was motivating her paternity lawsuit.

The foundation and the museum in Figueres took steps to make sure no images of the exhumation may emerge in public.

To ensure no photos were taken of Dali's body, mobile phones were placed in a deposit box and a marquee was installed under the museum's glass dome.

The biological samples will travel to a forensic laboratory in Madrid for analysis, a process that could take weeks.
