Police report corroborates testimony that Paterno knew of previous Sandusky allegations

When Joe Paterno was informed of a locker-room encounter between Penn State assistant Jerry Sandusky and a young boy in 2001, the legendary coach indicated it was not the first time he had heard of such an incident, according to a 2011 police report revealed by CNN Saturday.

The report says that when whistleblower and former Penn State assistant coach Mike McQueary told Paterno in 2001 that he'd witnessed Sandusky performing a lewd sexual act with a young boy, Paterno allegedly told McQueary that his was the second such claim against Sandusky.

Paterno died of cancer in January 2012, having been fired from his coaching position at Penn State and having told a grand jury and issuing a statement one week before his death saying he was unaware of Sandusky's abusive conduct prior to the 2001 shower incident McQueary had told him about.

What did Joe Paterno know and when did he know it?

The Penn State child sex abuse case, which came to light in 2011, rocked the State College, Pa. campus and the rest of the world.

It regards a legal battle between Penn State and insurance companies over who's ultimately responsible for $60 million in settlements to Sandusky's victims.

Paterno's family sued the NCAA in 2013 over its investigation into how Paterno and other administrators handled abuse allegations.

McQueary's claim of abuse and other allegations is what led to Jerry Sandusky's conviction in 2012 for sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years.

Paterno went to Penn State heads and nothing really happened for nearly a decade before a Grand Jury investigation finally took place which then resulted in Sandusky being convicted.

Paterno told The Washington Post's Sally Jenkins in 2012 that he had "no inkling" that Sandusky was a pedophile and serial child molester, going so far as to claim the entire concept of a man raping another man was foreign to him.

In a letter published by USA Today last September, Jay Paterno, Paterno's son and the Nittany Lions' current quarterbacks coach, stated that his father never enabled Sandusky and that he reported the 2001 allegation to the fullest extent of the law. "With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more".
