The global bosses were adamant the poppy should be banned from football shirts as they saw it as a "political symbol" outlawed by the rules of the game.

A ban on players displaying poppies is expected to be lifted before worldwide games in November.

England and Scotland wore special armbands with the emblem on during their World Cup qualifier at Wembley last November, with Wales and Northern Ireland displaying poppies in their stadiums.

"It is completely right that footballers and fans alike should be able to wear poppies with pride, as a tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of our servicemen and women".

According to Sky Sports News, FIFA have sent out a draft proposal to its member nations with revised provisions that could see the poppy permitted if opposing teams and the competition organiser for the relevant match both accept its use in advance.
