"The wound sent Samson to the floor".

"That's like him. He's just someone who cares about a lot of people", Rheta Engle said.

Engle, who has a permit for a handgun, then made sure Samson stayed on the ground until officers arrived, Aaron said.

Police later recovered another pistol and a shotgun from the suspect's vehicle.

"Mr. Engle saved countless lives here today", said Don Aaron, a spokesman for the Metro Nashville Police Department.

"He's the hero", Anderson said. "Without him I think it could be worse".

Emanuel Kidega Samson is seen being transported to a Tennessee jail in a photo released by the Metro Nashville Police Department on September 24, 2017.

CNN reported that a vigil will be held Monday evening and Samson is expected back in court on Wednesday.

Engle said in a statement released Sunday evening that he'd attended the church since he was a small child and he did not want to be labeled as a hero. "As this is an ongoing investigation we are not able to comment further at this time". The church is located in Antioch, a neighborhood in Davidson County governed by Nashville.
