Star Trek: Discovery Opening Title Sequence Released Ahead of Premiere

Despite being outfitted with some interesting wrinkles, "Star Trek: Discovery" is an unspectacular addition to the existing fleet of "Trek"-branded series". According to CBS, the show's launch has led to the highest sign-up day ever for CBS All Access, the streaming service that will be the exclusive home to the series following last night's streaming and broadcast premiere.

The Star Trek series will air on CBS in the USA and on Netflix in the UK. In the meantime, I'm going to wait and see.

Returning to the time of the original series and positioning Star Trek Discovery as a prequel series invites comparisons to the first iteration of Star Trek. It moves fast and the story is gripping, and the visuals easily eclipse anything done by Star Trek on TV before. The renowned Trek insider says he was particularly impressed with the show's depiction of it's central binary star system, which looks likely to play a big role in the upcoming series. A human woman raised by Vulcans, Burnham has found a unique perspective on that species' devotion to logic: she believes emotions are necessary to logical thinking, rather than a detriment, making her the most interesting thing to happen to the Vulcan mythology since J.J. Abrams decided to make Vulcans refugees by blowing up the planet in his 2009 feature-film reboot.

Unlike the previous generations of Star Trek, however, only the first episode of Discovery will be available for free.

While this leaves the door open for younger versions of favourite characters to drop in - it also means it will mostly be a whole set of brand new fleet members on board a new Starship that ISN'T the iconic Enterprise. Klingon Leader T'Kuvma invited the 24 houses to fight the Federation. At the same time, fans have anxious that none of these visuals line up with the history of the show - Discovery is basically set at the same time as "The Cage", the original Trek pilot which starred Jeffrey Hunter.

It's Star Trek as we remember it, but better. Whether things take a different course over the next 13 episodes remains to be seen, although by all accounts the war with the Klingons will dominate this first season.

Vulture wrote: "This is light years removed from being a ideal TV show, but it already shows signs of being a great one". Discovery's opening episode, meanwhile, sees the Shenzou investigate a damaged Federation array only to come across a hidden Klingon vessel - though the end results there were slightly more violent...
