Ms Waters came second, with 21.3% of the 12,915 votes cast. As the Conservatives begin to make concessions to Brussels over Britain's exit from the EU, Ukip could find itself making a comeback as the only party pushing for a total Brexit.

Some UKIP MEPs have threatened to leave the party if Ms Waters wins.

The victor of the leadership election will be announced at about 17:00 BST at the party's annual conference in Torquay.

Former police officer and soldier Henry Bolton is Ukip's new leader following a shock result.

"I would call on all of you, whether you voted for me or not, to please rally around the party and be united because without being united, we can not lead and hold the government to account and achieve our core goal".

Although this might not sound like the typical credentials of a Ukip politician, Bolton is respected within the party - winning multiple endorsements from the party's MEPs during the course of the leadership campaign.

Henry Bolton was announced as Ukip's new leader on September 29, 2017, at the party's conference in Torquay.

In comments which appeared to be aimed at Ms Waters, the former Army officer warned earlier this month that Ukip was in danger of becoming the "UK Nazi Party" if it picked the wrong leader to succeed Mr Nuttall.

Mr Bolton called on the party to unite behind him to allow him to deliver its aims. You are the party, not me.

Paul Nuttall quit as UKIP leader after the general election, which saw UKIP's vote share shrink to 1.8% at the general election from 12.6% in 2015 - the year before the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union. In a tweet, Farage claimed he was "delighted" with the result and said Bolton as a "man of real substance".

"This party needs to serve its country".
