Indonesia Prepares to Divert Bali-Bound Flights in Case of Volcanic Eruption

Almost 50,000 people have fled the volcano region, with experts saying an eruption is imminent.

A government spokesman, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said: "In general the evacuation is going well, the logistics supply is sufficient for the evacuees' needs".

Villagers watch the Mount Agung volcano from their an evacuee camp in Klungkung, Bali, Indonesia, Friday, Sept. 29, 2017.

Agung, which dominates the landscape in the northeast of the island, last erupted in 1963, killing more than 1100 people and remained active for about a year.

He said: "The current unrest on Agung may well lead to an eruption, and it will be closely monitored by the Indonesian authorities, who have already taken preventative action by evacuating local populations".

The national disaster management agency said many people have fled because they are unsure of their proximity to a 12km exclusion zone imposed around the crater. Since then, tens of thousands of villagers have been urged to abandon their homes beneath the menacing volcano.

Nyoman Lanus Kecil, 75, said he fled his home when it began to rain ash and got on a boat to another Indonesian island "but when I arrived there was nothing".

Seismic activity detected near North Korean nuclear site; cause is unknown
North Korea's recent missile launches over Japan especially drew stern rebukes from Tokyo and the global community. Ri did not respond on Saturday when asked by reporters whether North Korea had conducted a new nuclear test.

More than 800 earthquakes were recorded in the area Monday alone - with additional 400 by Tuesday midday - and a smoke column was seen emanating from the crater. "I'm confused and don't know what to do".

"We've set a target to evacuate 20,000 more cows from the affected areas", Nugroho said.

Bali's primary visitor hubs are in the island's south, about 70km from Mount Agung.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire and has 127 active volcanoes - more than any other country.

A natural disaster has been declared in parts of Bali with fears the island's largest volcano could erupt at anytime.

Some tourists, however, were having second thoughts about their holiday plans after several countries, including Singapore and Australia, issued travel advisories warning of the risk from the volcano.
