OJ Simpson Goes Free; Midnight Timing "To Ensure Public Safety"

On Sunday, shortly after midnight, Orenthal James Simpson, a.k.a. O.J., began his new life, after serving almost a decade behind bars.

In a statement previously issued to PEOPLE, Goldman's sister, Kim, and his father, Ron, explain that "while we respect the Nevada Parole Board's decision to release Simpson, it's still hard for us knowing he will be a free man again".

He could be seen responding "OK" as he left through an open door, wearing a baseball cap, denim jacket, jeans and white tennis shoes.

O.J. Simpson's friend from Naples, Florida, Tom Scotto, says he was with the former football great after he was freed from a remote Nevada prison.

"He's not going to hide", Scotto said, as noted by CNN.

O.J. Simpson attends a parole hearing at Lovelock Correctional Center July 20, 2017 in Lovelock, Nevada.

Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson's attorney, told the Los Angeles Times that he and his client were prepared to wait until October 6 for the release.

There has been no information as to where he was headed.

He becomes eligible for release Sunday (09-01-17), but LaVergne said he doesn't know where or when it will happen.

"I can tell from his voice on the phone last night that he's looking forward to freedom and hugging his family on the outside", LaVergne said.

The parole board that agreed his release cited his record of good behavior, and his lack of any previous convictions.

In a letter to Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julie L. Jones, state Attorney General Pam Bondi instructed Jones to notify Nevada authorities that Florida "objects" to Simpson serving his parole there. She had first met Simpson when she was 18 and he was married to his first wife.

If Simpson is released Sunday or Monday, the 70-year-old won't be welcomed to Florida.

"We needed to do this to ensure public safety and to avoid any possible incident", Keast said by phone.

The former American football player was jailed after being convicted for kidnapping and armed robbery in a Las Vegas hotel, back in 2007.
