The leaders of two ISIS-affiliated groups in the southern Philippines city of Marawi were eliminated in an exchange of fire between terrorists and the country's security forces, various news outlets reported Monday morning.

Also known as Abu Handzalah, Mahmud, reports said, is considered as the driving force behind the unity of Abu Sayyaf, Maute Group, BIFF and Ansarul Khilafah Philippines who pledged to fight under the Islamic State.

Mr Duterte spoke in Marawi before an audience of troops at a ruined school campus about a kilometre from the area where fighting continues.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the southern city of Marawi liberated after almost five months under Islamic State control.

Military chief Gen. Eduardo Ano told AP that Duterte's statement means the threat from the militants, who've been fighting in Marawi since May 23, is substantially over.

Meanwhile, Major General Restituto Padilla, the spokesman of the Armed Forces of the Philippies, said that despite Duterte's declaration of Marawi's "liberation", government forces would continue their mopping up operations until the remaining terrorist have been arrested or killed.
