Trump reportedly no longer trusts advice from son-in-law Jared Kushner

Trump reportedly complained to ousted White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon on the phone yesterday that Kushner convinced him to fire disgraced National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and followed up that request by asking him to fire former FBI Director James Comey.

Mr Kushner voluntarily turned over documents he had from the campaign and the transition and those related to any contacts with Russian Federation, according to a source familiar with the matter. Kushner is reportedly not a target of the investigation. Former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos has pleaded guilty for making a false statement to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about contacts with people connected with the Russian government. Separately, Trump official George Papadopoulos agreed to a plea deal, admitting he lied to FBI investigators.

Their questions about Kushner signal that Mueller's investigators are reaching the President's inner circle and have extended beyond the 2016 campaign to actions taken at the White House by high-level officials. "The walls are closing in", one senior Republican close to the White House told the "New York Post".

According to Vanity Fair writer Gabriel Sherman, those indictments announced loud and clear that the Russian Federation investigation poses an existential threat to Trump's presidency. His attorneys have repeatedly said he will cooperate with Mr Mueller's investigators.

The question of whether - or just how much - Kushner influenced the President's decision to fire Comey is a matter of dispute among those in Trump's orbit.

Former White House staff members-whether encamped at Breitbart News or anywhere else-are constrained by 18 USC 207, which governs "restrictions on former officers, employees, and elected officials of the executive and legislative branches". Another possibility, they warn, is that Bannon could be attempting to "hamper" Mueller's probe by delaying the White House's responses.

Earlier this week Mr. Mueller's probe was the center of attention when it charged Mr. Manafort and his longtime business partner Rick Gates - with conspiracy and money laundering. Comey had been overseeing the Russian Federation investigation at the FBI, leading to questions about whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice by firing him. Both pleaded not guilty.

Kushner was also under scrutiny for meetings with Russia's ambassador to the USA and a Russian banker, and for failing to list hundreds of meetings with foreign contacts on his security clearance forms, which he blamed on an assistant.
