Seven teams started outside that top four and two of those were outside the top 10.

Oklahoma, which sits at No. 5, is led by Heisman hopeful Baker Mayfield, who's been a human highlight reel this season under first-year head coach Lincoln Riley.

These initial rankings also give us an indication that the committee values convincing wins very highly. We should be able to see just how serious this Georgia team is when they face a tough test next weekend at Auburn. Notre Dame has blown out USC and NC State the past two weeks. Last season, Penn State beat Ohio State and won the Big Ten title, but, its record hurt by early-season losses, watched helplessly as the Buckeyes sailed into the playoff anyway.

Wisconsin (8-0) has had an easy run of it to this point and will likely remain undefeated until the Big Ten championship game.

But the 13-member playoff selection committee, which includes current athletic directors, former coaches and others, adjudged Georgia the superior team at this point in the season, at a time when the Bulldogs have played two ranked teams - including a victory on the road at Notre Dame - while the Crimson Tide have played none.

The College Football Playoff championship will be Jan. 8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. Things will play out on the field, but the playoff committee dropped some not-so-subtle clues about how it might play out the next month.

I thought they would keep Ohio State and, possibly, Oklahoma ahead of them, but they surprised me.

The Dawgs are on top-at least for now. "It's not really done that way". "There's a lot of ball left to be played (for everybody) in the country". Let me quickly/haphazardly rank those wins in quality: Syracuse/at Florida State, Louisville, at Pitt, Marshall, Furman.

Reminder, Notre Dame plays Wake Forest and Stanford again this November on top of unbeaten however unimpressive Miami and a Navy team that beat the Irish last year. But this is hardly unexpected.

Mississippi State was ranked first in the inaugural College Football Playoff rankings in 2014. The Crimson Tide came in at No. 2.

A six-point loss to Arizona State is the only blemish to the Washington schedule to this point, but their strength of schedule does not help their case for reaching the playoffs for a second straight year.

Let's be blunt, these rankings don't matter. Just in case they do though, we'll have you covered.
