Iran's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qassemi said its missile programme was defensive and unrelated to the landmark nuclear deal that put a cap on Iran's nuclear activity in exchange for sanctions relief. He raised the prospect of possible sanctions with regard to those activities. Previously, Paris voiced its commitment to the agreement, favoring new nuclear negotiations after 2025, when some of the provisions expire.

"We have told French officials repeatedly that the nuclear deal is not negotiable and other issues will not be allowed to be added to it", Qassemi said, according to a statement on the ministry's website.

Qassemi warned France against making "false accusations against the Islamic Republic of Iran", adding that the allegations were concocted by a few Gulf states in an attempt to tarnish Tehran's image in the world.

"There are negotiations we need to start on Iran's ballistic missiles", Macron said. Earlier, Saudi Arabia accused Iran of "a clear act of aggression that targets neighboring countries, and threatens peace and security in the region and globally". The missile had been fired by Yemen's Houthi Ansarullah movement, which has been defending the impoverished country against a deadly Saudi-led invasion since March 2015.

"The French president perfectly knows that making such claims against the Islamic Republic of Iran fits no reality of the past decades' realities in the Middle East", highlighted the Iranian diplomat.
