ARMY tanks were allegedly spotted heading towards Harare Tuesday amid a spike tensions as the stand-off between President Robert Mugabe and the Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander continues.

Before being ousted, Mnangagwa had clashed repeatedly with Mugabe's wife Grace, 52, who is widely seen as vying with Mnangagwa to be the next president when Mugabe dies.

General Constantine Chiwenga, the head of Zimbabwe's military, warned on Monday that troops would intervene if long-term political allies continued to suffer.

Mugabe's 37 years in power has been anchored by support from the military, which has always said it will not back anyone for president who did not fight in the liberation war.

ZANU-PF said Chiwenga's stance was "clearly calculated to disturb national peace. and suggests treasonable conduct on his part as this was meant to incite insurrection". The long-serving veteran of Zimbabwe's 1970s liberation war, had been viewed as a likely successor to Mugabe before the president fired him.

A number of people posted images of the military vehicles on social media.

Mugabe is yet to respond to Chiwenga's coup threats.

When you see a normal couple post digs about their significant other it usually comes off as a cheap shot and a bit cringey. In August, Reynolds shared a birthday message for his wife but cut her mostly out from the photo he shared.

"We must remind those behind the current treacherous shenanigans that when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in", Chiwenga said in a statement read to reporters at the army headquarters.

eNCA's Zimbabwean correspondent Pindai Dube confirmed the tanks were visible in the streets of Harare, with sources indicating it was a "show of force" rather than a coup.

He fled the country and is thought to be in South Africa after issuing a searing five-page condemnation of Grace's ambition and Mugabe's leadership.

President Robert Mugabe's wife Grace, linked to a faction called G40, was accused of having been instrumental in the axing of Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week.

"The current purging ... targeting members of the party with a liberation background must stop forthwith", he said.

Addressing a press conference in the capital, Chiwenga, a perceived Mnangagwa loyalist, said the purges must stop.

Grace Mugabe - 41 years younger than her husband - has become increasingly active in public life in what many say is a process to help her eventually take the top job.
