Judge declares mistrial in Senator Robert Menendez corruption case

The long-awaited verdict for Democratic Sen.

Robert Menendez ended in a mistrial Thursday after seven tense days of deliberations by a deeply divided jury. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky) has called for an ethics investigation into the New Jersey senator's actions that led to the indictment.

Walls interviewed the jury foreman and another juror behind closed doors.

In the same time period, Melgen was providing the senator trips on his private jets, letting him stay at his home in a Dominican Republic resort and making $660,000 in political contributions to entities that could help Menendez win re-election in 2012.

Defense attorneys countered that Menendez and Melgen were longtime buddies and the gifts, rather than bribes, reflecting their close relationship.

"They are telling us in the clearest terms possible that they have done their job as diligent jurors".

Jurors needed more, according to Norris. In theory, once a senator faces federal bribery charges, it's tempting to think his or her career probably won't recover, but I'd caution against assuming that in this case. "I just didn't see a smoking gun".

The 63-year-old senator was charged with conspiracy, bribery and honest services fraud related to abusing the power of his office.

Jurors also failed to reach the unanimous conclusion that Menendez had "knowingly and willfully" falsified his annual disclosure forms in an attempt to hide the gifts from Melgen, an allegation in the last count of the indictment against the men.

In a statement, the U.S. Justice Department said it will consider its next step.

Menendez said he felt vindicated.

"To those who were digging my political grave so that they could jump into my seat, I know who you are, and I won't forget you", he said.

Monday's note was sent out just hours after an alternate juror joined the group to replace one who was excused last week for vacation.

After the jury informed Walls that it remained deadlocked this morning, Walls rejected the prosecution's suggestion that the jury return to deliberation or give them option of issuing a partial verdict. "We have each tried to look at this case from different viewpoints but still feel strongly in our positions, nor are we willing to move away from our strong convictions", the note said. Menendez and Florida eye doctor Salomon Melgen (MEHL'-genn) were charged with running a bribery scheme between 2006 and 2013.
