"Congress and PAAS have reached an agreement".

In the first list there are 23 candidates from the Patidar community, including both Congress as well as PAAS nominees. Mr. Thakor joined the Congress recently. This time, despite lacking a strong state leader to fill in the gap created after Modi's elevation as Prime Minister, Shah has set an ambitious target to win 150 seats.

The caste arithmetic in this list has eight OBCs, 12 Kolis and seven dalits, among others. Congress hopes that anti-incumbency and the support of young leaders like Patel, OBC leader Alpesh Thakore and Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani will help it make a comeback in the state.

"We have compromised and agreed on the issues that had been acting as obstacles since the last meeting", ANI quoted Congress's Gujarat unit chief Bharat Singh Solanki, as saying. "We have clarified all their queries and the meeting has ended on a positive note". Mr Patel is due to address a rally in CM Vijay Rupani's constituency in Rajkot on Monday.

The ruling BJP has so far announced 106 candidates out of total 182 seats, by releasing two lists so far. Polling in the hilly state was held on November 9. The counting of votes will take place on December 18.

PAAS leaders Lalit Vasoya and Amit Thummar will contest from Dhoraji and Junagadh seats respectively. "The BJP's organisational penetration in Gujarat could well be several notches higher than what the CPI (M) enjoyed in its hey days in West Bengal", a senior party leader said.

"I have declared it earlier and I am declaring it today as well that I will not fight the Gujarat Assembly elections", Mr Solanki said.
